I am sure you are all aware of the legacy that is Obey. I own a bit of Obey clothing and have always been inspired by the movement that is Obey Giant. Ever since I got into street culture, Obey had always been a top ranking official in the streets all around the world. So i thought i would give you a brief history lesson on the giant presence that is Obey.
Originating in Rhode Island as a kind of 'inside joke' within street culture (mainly hiphop and skating crews) a young student named Shepard Fairey and his mates decided to get shit moving. It was the late 80's, and five young cultural entrepreneurs started posting all over Rhode Island "Andre the Giant has a posse". As aforementioned, it was originally an in joke for the street cultures involved for a number of reasons. However, no one could predict that these poster pasting propaganda people would pull off such a number of places that by the early 90's the 'Obey' movement had covered most of the United States and in many countries around the world.
Shepard Fairey is most notably the creator of the movement that has seen his work cross many countries over many media platforms. It was natural that this movement would be transfered onto a canvas that can been seen whilst constantly moving, much alike train graffiti. And alas! Obey created their clothing line and has been at it for longer than I have been walking this planet. Here are just some of their new line...I could go on for hours about Obey, but I would never do them justice. Giants!
